Taking
a road trip with your Pug
Like us humans, Pugs react differently when
traveling in a car. Many Pugs just love going for a ride,
while others find it very stressful. Yet, a road trip with
your beloved four-legged friend can in most cases be a really
delightful experience for both of you – if you just
plan ahead!

In
order for both you and your dog to enjoy a road trip,
you need to get your Pug used to riding in the car.
Doing this takes time, but it is worth it in the end.
The first thing you should do is to come to a decision
about how your Pug will travel in the car. If your Pug
is used to a crate, let him ride in it. This is safer
for him if there is an accident. If your Pug doesn’t
like riding in a crate, he should at least be buckled
up. There are loads of different kinds of seatbelts
for dogs at any pet store, so there is no excuse for
having your Pug “wandering around” unprotected
in the car (even if you have a divider).
When you have decided how your Pug is going to ride
in the car, you should begin with taking short trips
so that he gets used to the sounds and the movements
of the car. It is always a good idea to take trips to
fun places like the beach, so that your fury friend
starts to associate the car ride with something delightful.

For longer trips you need to plan ahead a lot more carefully.
First of all, you must plan your trip so that you have plenty
of time for taking water breaks and potty breaks. Pugs need
lots of water (especially when it is hot) so you should always
make sure that he gets enough during the trip. To make the
trip more enjoyable for your Pug, you could also bring some
of his toys and his favorite blanket on board.
Some Pugs, and especially puppies, might also get carsick
or even panic-like reactions while traveling. If you know
that your Pug gets very anxious and uncomfortable, it might
be better for him to stay at home. Nevertheless, if you really
need to bring your Pug with you on the road you should talk
to your veterinarian about suitable medication for him.
Have a nice trip!
